Movie of My Life

I was standing in line to buy a ticket to the feature film, “My Life.” I got to the ticket booth and said, “One ticket please.”

The person behind the glass said, “To which life are you referring? Past, present, those yet to be created or a possible alternative perspective or ending?”

“I don’t understand.”

“You’ve lived many lives already, the journey you were on came to an end.”

“What?! I’m dead? How could that be? I was waiting in line to see the movie.”

“Yes, you’re dead, what is the last thing you remember?”

“Going to bed last night after tucking my son in.”

“You passed away, peacefully in your sleep. The medics will say it was heart failure. That is true, your heart did stop beating. What is also true is that it was your time to go.”

“What about my son?”

“His journey isn’t over yet.”

“That’s good to hear, but what will happen to him? Will he be alright without me? Who will take care of him?”

“Who is the person you trust the most in that world to take care of him?”

“My parents, I mean I know we don't always see eye to eye, but they truly love him and will accept him for whoever he decides to be.”

“Ok, then it sounds like he is in good hands. If you wish, you may choose to watch his feature film.”

“He’s in a feature film?”

“Right now, he is on a new film being created which is available to watch as it plays out, his previous ones are available and so are yours.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t understand what you mean.”

Then he gestured for me to walk with him to the theater. When we entered, there was a vast hallway with rows and rows of movies.

“Does this look familiar? You’ve been here many times.”

“Not at all! Where are we? I thought this was a movie theater or something.”

“This is the archive of all the lives you’ve lived. You can watch one or start a new feature film.”

“I think I want to watch my old life.”

“As you wish.”

He left and I watched every scene for what felt like ten minutes, but it was 28 years.

Then he came back as the feature ended and said, “So what do you think?”

“I think I want to choose the same life I had.”

“You’ve decided just as you always do. Watch your old life and relive it over.”

“Wait, I choose the same life every time I die?”

“Yes, and your wish is my command.”
